This ONE Question Will Help You Set a Powerful Goal in the New Year – Audio Transcript

Hey Belma from Work Bigger here helping you do work you love that makes a difference in the world without burning out.

Today I want to talk about goal-setting because it’s that time of year when we’re reflecting and planning for the new year ahead.

Everyone is making new year’s resolutions and setting goals…

And honestly I have a confession to make…

I’ve always struggled with setting big goals in the new year.

I do it but somewhere along the way, I lose track of my goal.

Before I know it, it’s April and I’m already off course.

And the result is – I lose motivation and eventually toss my goal to the side or I set a new, smaller goal.

I know I’m not alone in this.

Goal-setting is challenging. I see it in the Work Bigger Community all the time.

So what do we do?

How can we set goals that last?

And how can we become better at setting goals so that we can achieve the results we want?

At Work Bigger, we use the SMART goal framework – which for us is really just a starting point…

The framework asks you to create goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound

What I like about this framework is that it asks you to make sure your goals are hitting certain points…

Goals need to be specific, they need to be achievable – we want to measure them because that way we can see how we’re progressing, and we want to set a specific time around it.

But none of that matters if your goal is missing one thing.

Here’s the most powerful question to ask yourself when you’re setting goals this year.

I want you to ask: Does this goal motivate me?

If your goal doesn’t motivate you or excite you, then forget it.

A goal has to create a level of excitement for you – it has to drive you and push you out of your comfort zone.

So how do you know if your goal motivates you?

Well feel it in your body…I like to close my eyes and ask myself, how does this goal FEEL?

If I’m pursuing this goal, who will i have to become?

What will I need to do differently that will require me to level up?

For me, if it means I get to grow in the process, I’m game.

So a goal that feels really motivating may have a mix of excitement and nervousness. It feels doable but also like it’s going to stretch you.

So motivation is key.

Now I want to hear from you.

Take this time to set your goal for the new year.

  • What do you want to accomplish in the next few months? (I’m a big fan of smaller goals by the way.)
  • And, how does it feel when you imagine working on that goal?

Let me know, and I can give you some coaching on it.

That’s it for this week Work Bigger.

Stay tuned for a quick follow up message after this, and I’ll see you next week!
